Hand-carved and pyro-etched Peruvian gourd in the mate burilado tradition, an Andean folk art form from the Huancayo and Cochas regions of Peru. Approximately 5 inches in diameter, featuring a wrap-around scene of Galapagos wildlife: giant tortoise, penguin, cormorant, jackrabbit, prickly pear cactus, and native flora in warm amber and black tones. A sunburst motif decorates the crown. Natural dried seeds inside produce a soft rattle sound when shaken, consistent with traditional Andean mate burilado rattles. The Galapagos subject matter is uncommon for this art form, adding collector interest beyond the typical village and harvest scenes.
No chips, cracks, or structural damage. Natural surface variation is consistent with hand-crafted gourd material.
