Mondano (often spelled Modano) is a centuries-old Italian style of hand-knotted filet lace. While it originated from the practical net-making techniques of fishing communities, it evolved into a highly decorative art form used for prestigious linens and aristocracy. Unlike crochet, which is built stitch-by-stitch, Mondano starts with a hand-knotted net foundation (similar to a fisherman's net) with square or diamond-shaped meshes. Once the net is stretched onto a metal frame, artisans use a needle and thread to "darn" or weave patterns into the open squares. It has "raised" designs, such as petals or wheatear patterns, which are embroidered over the flat net to create a 3D texture from the 1920s to the 1960s. The Art Deco era (1930s) was a particularly popular time for these designs.
