Shakespeare Meets Gilded Age Marketing
A stunning nearly-complete set of 5 original Victorian chromolithograph trade cards. Published by I.L. Cragin & Co. of Philadelphia, this series used the Bard’s famous "All the world's a stage" speech to sell laundry soap—a classic example of 19th-century "high brow" advertising.
The Collection Includes:
Card No. 2: The School-boy ("creeping like snail")
Card No. 3: The Lover ("sighing like furnace")
Card No. 4: The Soldier ("full of strange oaths")
Card No. 6: The Pantaloon ("spectacles on nose")
Card No. 7: The Justice ("fair round belly")
Why This Is a Special Purchase:
Vivid Chromolithography: The gold-ground printing and bold red borders remain exceptionally bright for being ~140 years old.
Historical Series: These cards were "premiums"—customers had to mail in 7 grocer certificates to receive the set, making intact groups very difficult to find today.
Cross-Collector Appeal: High demand from Shakespeare enthusiasts, soap brand collectors, and Victorian ephemera buffs.
No returns or refunds.
