The Inuit would often make sculptures of small animals that were important to the community's survival. The soapstone carvings usually depicted these precious animals in their everyday lives, both calm and beautiful. The Owl is a symbol of guidance, wisdom and peace. Some Inuit believed that owls help the spirits of people who have passed on and provide guidance to the afterworld.
This owl is a reproduction of a carving by Thomas McPhee, a non-Indian Canadian artist. Size is 3½ inches wide and 4 inches tall. Made of a blend of natural minerals and man-made binders with the heft and feel of soapstone. Made in Canada.
