THE BOYDS BEARS STORY: The brand’s story began in 1984 when Gary & Justina (Unger) Lowenthal, owners of a small antique shop in Boyds, Maryland, hand-made a 12-inch stuffed bear with moveable joints for their newborn son Matthew. From this first Boyds Bear the line grew in popularity and collectability until it was retired in 2014. Enesco purchased the brand then and introduced 12 new 45th Anniversary bears in 2024. What set Boyds Bears apart wasn‘t just their adorable appearances, but the incredible detail embedded in every stitch. Unlike mass-produced toys, these bears are each one unique, each one telling a story.
