Antique “The New Dressmaker” book from Butterick
This amazing book was the accepted authority in dressmaking and tailoring when it was released in the early 1920s
This copy is the third edition, printed in 1921 by the Butterick Publishing Co., New York
It contains a plethora of information, from necessary dressmaking equipment to alterations, sewing stitches and seams, tucks and plaits, plackets, trimmings and more
This was the go-to book for seamstresses for decades and very few copies have survived
This copy has age appropriate wear which adds to its vintage charm
I can just imagine how many times it was scoured by experienced seamstresses and youngsters just learning to sew
It has charming details such as a handwritten name inside the front cover
And I found a little treasure tucked in between pages 98 and 99 - a piece of cloth, carefully handsewn with black thread, and the handwritten note Plain Seam along the bottom
There’s no telling how long this little memento has been nestled inside… I carefully placed it back where it had been found to continue its history
This is just a gem of a book, such a neat look into the history of sewing and techniques, antique style and fashion
Hardcover, 174 printed pages
Nice antique condition with age appropriate wear, no missing or torn pages and slight splitting near the bottom around pages 48-49 (photo 10)
It will be carefully packaged/boxed for shipping
Please see all photos as part of the description

I just have to comment on the line in the book, 'You give your frock the finish that spells P-A-R-I-S', haha, so charming! The
"Deltor" was Butterick's method for laying out, cutting and assembling from their patterns, it's short for 'Delineator', the Butterick pattern method. This book would be a very valuable addition to anyone interested in vintage clothes and sewing. I'd buy it for myself but I can't afford it. Maybe one day I'll find another copy. 'Bye!
