This vintage 1970s Paganne dress by legendary American designer, Gene Berk, is a rare find.
Set against a coral background, the vibrant floral pattern was designed by Gene Berk himself. The dress has a collar and long sleeves, as well as a zippered closure at the back and an elastic waist.
Gene Berk’s prints were copyrighted and signed "©Paganne" – if you look closely at the photos of this piece, you will see the copyright mark. According to the Vintage Fashion Guild, the tag on this piece indicates that it’s from the 1970s.
Although “14” is listed on the tag and may be presumed to be the size, it’s important to note that this piece does not correspond to a present-day size 14. It’s closer to a size medium – it measures 18” (46cm) from pit-to-pit, 13” (33cm) across the waist, and 41” long (104cm).
This dress was dry cleaned prior to listing on Poshmark. There are a couple of very faint spots that remain, though they are not highly visible – refer to photos #10, #11 and #12.
This dress is a work of art that will be a treasured addition to your vintage wardrobe.
Gene Berk was an American fashion designer who founded Paganne Ltd. in New York the 1960s. He hand-sketched his own bold, colourful textile patterns, and sent them to Italy to be transformed into screenprint textiles. The finished textiles were then sent to him in New York, where he designed his garments based on the patterns in the textiles. His pieces remain highly sought-after in the vintage fashion market.
