A pair of beautiful, hand-carved vintage Chinese white soapstone statuettes depicting an elegant phoenix bird (often styled as a peacock) perched on a classical pillar base. The phoenix traditionally symbolizes grace, virtue, and prosperity in Chinese art. When these were exported to western markets, they were commonly sold as “peacock” or “exotic bird” figurines. Dating to the mid-20th century export era (circa 1960s-1970s), these statuettes retain fragments of their original red and white factory export paper label on the underside. The pair of birds are uniquely hand-carved and they show subtle variances in the feather texture, crest, and brick layout of the pedestals. They are in excellent vintage condition with a lovely natural luster and smooth finish. Any minor imperfections are consistent with time and use, as well as the characteristics of soapstone.
