A striking piece of modernist tableware by Towle, sterling silver covered butter dish in a sleek modernist design, paired with its original matte black ceramic base. The sterling lid is marked Towle Sterling and features the original geometric black phenolic handle, creating a beautiful contrast against the satin black ceramic. The clean lines and understated styling are characteristic of the Contempra House aesthetic associated with designer Earl Pardon. The sterling lid shows light surface scratching and gentle signs of use consistent with age and a couple small crimps . The ceramic base is in very good vintage condition with light utensil marks from normal use and no chips or cracks that I can find. Usable dish measures approximately 6 inches long. An elegant and increasingly hard-to-find piece of mid-century modern tableware that looks just as at home in a contemporary kitchen as it would have in the 1950s.
