The pattern wraps the entire case, including the board edges. The book was a runaway bestseller in 1940 and the zebra cloth made it an object people kept on display rather than shelved away — it remains a staple of designer and stylist shelves and has been reproduced and imitated for decades. This is an original 1940 Lippincott printing, not a modern reproduction. Condition: Good vintage condition. Binding is sound and square and the book stands and displays well. The zebra cloth is bright and the pattern is strong, with overall light soiling and toning, scattered small stains and darkened patches most visible along the lower front board and the edges, and rubbing to the corners and spine ends. Paper title labels are intact and fully legible on both the front board and spine. Text block edges are toned with light foxing. Interior is clean and readable with no highlighting or margin notes; the endpapers show light toning.
