An illustrated scholarly history of early European printing, covering the period from Johannes Gutenberg through Christophe Plantin. Topics include early movable type, fifteenth-century books, the Gutenberg Bible, printer’s marks, typography, presses and the spread of printing throughout Europe.
The book contains numerous reproductions and historical illustrations, including examples of early type, colophons, printed indulgences, book illustrations and pages from important early printed works.
Also included are several pieces of related vintage ephemera found inside the book:
• 1971 receipt from The Wells Book Store in West Sacramento for three hardcover books
• Monterey Peninsula Entertainment Guide dated July 25–31
• Vintage newspaper book-review clipping titled “Notes for Bibliophiles,” discussing Winship and the history of printing
Condition: Pre-owned vintage condition. The cloth boards show rubbing, scuffs, small spots and wear along the corners and edges. The spine ends have visible wear, and the paper spine label is age-toned. The front pastedown has rectangular discoloration from a previously attached item. Vintage receipt, newspaper clipping and entertainment guide are laid inside and show age toning, folds and handling wear. Interior pages have general age toning and occasional spotting or marks. The illustrations and text remain clear. Please examine all photographs carefully for the exact condition and contents.
