A ceramic pedestal bowl in the Yamasan style featuring an asymmetrical, free-form organic rim with a deep dips on the sides. 5 1/2 inch tall, 8 inch diameter. The exterior exhibits a heavily textured, speckled fat lava glaze in tones of brown, ochre, and cream, while the interior is finished in a smooth, glossy reddish-brown glaze. There are no chips or cracks. Very minor water marks in the interior. Examine photos carefully and consider them an integral part of the description. This piece originates from mid-century Japanese studio and export pottery, strongly influenced by the avant-garde Ikebana flower-arranging movement of the 1950s and 1960s. Japanese ceramic artists during this period experimented heavily with reactive, thick lava glazes and sculptural forms to evoke natural landscapes. Such vessels were crafted primarily for decorative use and artistic flower display, merging traditional craftsmanship with modern organic design.
