I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when I bought these, because they stopped me DEAD IN MY TRACKS. About 15 years ago, I was in Burlington, VT, taking a break from a tattoo session. My artist’s shop was nearby, so I went for a walk, and naturally, I ended up doing what I apparently have been genetically programmed to do for most of my life: LOOKING FOR SHOES. I actually had my heart set on something blue and gold. Then I walked past Maven Skate Shop and… BOOM. There they were. Only TWO PAIRS LEFT. Phat. Gold. Suede. Embroidered Nike Swoosh. Not quite a high-top, not quite a low-top. Just sitting there looking like they had been personally designed to ruin my plans for the day. And they did. I bought them. I’ve probably worn these 8–10 times total over the last 15 years. They’ve spent most of their life in storage because, frankly, I’m terrified of ruining them. I don’t wear suede in the rain, I don’t wear them when I’m doing anything stupid, and apparently I’ve been saving them for some imaginary occasion worthy of their greatness.
