Up for auction is this pair of vintage Kokeshi dolls that are a unique find from the 1950's, featuring hand-painted details and signatures on the bottom of each. Made in Japan, these dolls represent traditional Japanese culture and craftsmanship. The larger doll stands at 10 3/4" tall and the smaller doll is 7.5" tall, showcasing the intricate artistry and heritage of Japanese dolls. With beautiful warm colors or red and black in soft painted strokes they are tactile and warm and very charming. They are both signed on either their base by the artist. Kokeshi dolls originate from the Tohoku region of Northern Japan, an ornamental piece but seen as charms to prevent fires or even ward off evil. The beautiful designs of floral and linear patterns on the kimono would have been developed and passed down through generations. The larger one looks like it got wet, paint looks like it ran some. Shows wear. The smaller one is still wrapped in its original plastic.
