Vintage 50s-60s Deruta Gallo Verde Ceramic Cups from Orvieto, Italy
Authentic mid-century Italian maiolica
Very good vintage condition, minor spots where glaze was not applied
The Orvieto (or Orvietano) design is a very old and traditional pattern that originated during the Renaissance in the hill-top town of Orvieto – Italy. Truly one of Italy's most unique and interesting cities. The 'Galletto' (Rooster) pattern's main motif is a crowing rooster that symbolizes good wishes for blessings, prosperity and well-being. Hand made in Deruta-Italy. All Deruta of Italy products are lead and cadmium Free.
Bottom inscribed: P.V. ITALY: which stands for "Peasant Village". Rather than a single workshop, this was a highly popular mid-century brand name owned by the New York import firm Mittledorfer-Strauss. They contracted skilled traditional workshops in Italy—most notably the historic Grazia workshop in Deruta—to hand-paint ceramic dinnerware lines specifically for export to high-end US department stores between the 1920s and late 1960s.
