They are insulated, not just a shell. The legs have lightweight 60g Heatseeker insulation, so they don’t feel super thick or bulky, while the upper bib is a warmer fleece. So I’d describe them as warm, lightly insulated snow bibs rather than heavy/bulky snow pants. They’re also waterproof/windproof DryVent. The legs feel surprisingly thin because 60 g Heatseeker is intentionally low-bulk insulation.
The North Face describes Heatseeker as having a strong warmth-to-weight ratio specifically for warmth without a lot of bulk.
