Vintage Chinese Brass Silk Iron Dragon Pan Iron Polychrome Enamel Handle Chinois

An unusual vintage Chinese charcoal-heated silk iron, also known as a pan iron, traditionally used for pressing delicate textiles. The shallow brass pan features a wonderful raised dragon design around the exterior, with additional decorative borders. The ornate handle is finished in colorful polychrome enamel, with a vivid blue ground accented by green, pink, yellow and white floral and decorative motifs. The underside is stamped CHINA, indicating it was produced for export. Based on its construction and comparable examples, it appears to date to the early-to-mid 20th century, although an exact date and maker are unknown. These small pan irons were designed to hold a heat source such as hot charcoal in the brass bowl, allowing the heated metal surface to be moved over silk and other delicate fabrics. Today they make fascinating pieces of textile history as well as beautiful decorative objects. The brass has developed an attractive aged patina with darkening and surface variation consistent with age. The enamel remains colorful and displays beautifully.
