Vintage 1958 Cowboy Sam and Flop by Edna Walker Chandler, with colorful illustrations by Jack Merryweather. Published by Benefic Press, Chicago. An original mid-century children’s school reader from the popular Cowboy Sam series. The book contains five stories: “Flop and Brave,” “Branding the Calves,” “Flop and the Rattlesnake,” “The Cowboy Party,” and “The Dog Show.” Wonderful period illustrations throughout featuring cowboys, ranch horses, cattle and dogs, printed in vivid red, turquoise, tan, black and other colors. The book was designed as an early reader and includes instructional reading material at the back. Copyright 1958 • Benefic Press • Hardcover • 64 pages This is a former Paramount Park School library copy and retains its original library pocket and checkout card. Vintage library markings are present. Red cloth-covered pictorial boards show age-related rubbing and fading, edge/corner wear, and old label residue/wear on the spine. Interior pages remain quite attractive overall, with particularly bright and colorful illustrations. Please see photos for condition. A charming piece of 1950s children’s-book and classroom history, especially appealing for collectors of vintage school readers, cowboy and Western books, children’s illustration, dog books, or nostalgic classroom decor.
