These are antique and are somewhat primitive. Due to this they have a different finish than modern pottery. There are some imperfections and small chips in the smaller crock the are not really noticeable. In fact some appear to have happened prior to glazing so are an original flaw. I used these to hold my beeswax taper candles and votives. They are beautiful. Smoke free, pet free home. Antique German salt-glazed stoneware crocks, most famously produced in the Westerwald region of Germany. Often referred to as Keulse potten or lard/sauerkraut crocks, this specific style of pottery features a characteristic grey earthenware base achieved through a high-temperature salt-glazing process, beautifully contrasted with vibrant, hand-painted cobalt blue decorative brushwork. Key Characteristics & Identification • Material: Thick, durable, salt-glazed stoneware. • Handles: Hand-applied "ear-shaped" or crescent open loop handles designed for easy lifting. • Decoration: Stylized freehand waves, scrolls, or floral cobalt patterns traditional to late 19th and early 20th-century European utilitarian folk art. • Historical Use: These crocks were staples in European farmhouses for food preservation, fermenting sauerkraut, or storing salted meats, butter, and lard.
