They are unamarked. Hold the stone up to a strong light. Obsidian is natural volcanic glass and often shows some translucency or faint brown/green tints on thin edges. The Magnet Test: Use a strong fridge magnet. Sterling silver is not magnetic and will not stick. Some grades of stainless steel may show a slight magnetic pull, though higher-quality surgical steel is often non-magnetic as well. The Rub Test: Rub a small, inconspicuous part of the metal with a clean white cloth. If a tiny bit of black residue appears on the cloth, it is likely silver, which tarnishes naturally when exposed to air. Stainless steel will not leave a mark. All jewellery that can be cleaned is cleaned in a special jewellery cleaning solution and/or a buffing cloth.
