Originally published in 1933, *Voodoo-Eros: Ethnological Studies in the Sex-Life of the African Aborigines* presents Felix Bryk's controversial ethnographic account of his two-year immersion in equatorial African villages. Working among tribes including the Nandi, Bantu, Baganda, Kikuyu, and others north of Lake Victoria, Bryk documented intimate aspects of indigenous life rarely examined by Western observers of his era.
The book unflinchingly explores clothing, ornament, social relations between sexes, circumcision, courtship, marriage, prostitution, pregnancy, and more. Illustrated with over 100 photographs, Bryk's work examined prevailing misconceptions about love and sexuality across different cultures. Shocking in its day, the book now serves as a window into colonial-era anthropological attitudes, offering modern readers insight into both African cultural practices and the problematic lens through which early 20th-century Europeans viewed them.
A fascinating, if deeply flawed, artifact of its time.
