Dear Jessica, Wow! What a gorgeous woman on a horse brooch! I love it! It’s such an elegant golden rendition of a woman riding side-saddle on horseback as women were supposed to do in the early 20th century and earlier. I used to ride horseback as a child, wearing jodhpurs on an English saddle. I thought that it was an art learning to ride correctly on an English saddle wearing pants! So, I’ve always admired those women who had to learn to ride side-saddle, looking so elegant, wearing their ladies riding habits long dresses like the woman on the horse brooch. Many also used to jump their horses while doing it! That was truly an art when the ladies saddles only had an open loop connected to the saddle to throw one’s right leg over and a stirrup on the left side. What incredible horsewomen/equestrians! Now, women ride in side-saddle competitions at events like horse shows. It’s a riding art that’s still done in special circumstances for show. In the West, I don’t believe historically and generally that woman rode side-saddle as they did in other parts of the U.S. Western saddles were the norm for men and women and were more practical for western riding. I’ve loved horses since I was a child, so I love to collect horse jewelry now as a reminder that I still love horses, and that I used to ride horseback.
