So sorry for the delay in responding. I missed this comment some how. I did the measurements with the piece laying flat although depending on the placement of the straps the width was varying.

So I wouldn’t necessarily say 18” was the maximum but more of an average. The measurement seems to vary a little depending on how the straps lay.
