William Morris ~ British, 1834~1896 The influential designer William Morris produced a full range of handcrafted goods during the Victorian era, from books to furniture, but his wallpaper designs stand as beyond extraordinary for his artistic vision, exquisite detail and use of colour. Perhaps this is why they remain timeless and well loved… Morris believed that beauty, imagination, & order were essential components of a successful design; all three are evident in « Pink and Rose » his hand-block-printed wallpaper from about 1890. « Pink » in the title refers not to the colour but to fragrant flowers in the genus Dianthus. As both designer and professional printer, the work of William Morris, along with his ideals, were seminal to the flourishing of the Arts and Crafts movement in England; John Ruskin, art critic and Thomas Carlyle, historian, were also key figures.
