This family novel "THE LONG WINTER" is part of the "LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE" series and it tells of the Ingalls family fight for survival through the winter of 1880 - 1881 in the Dakota Territory. Warned by the Native Americans the coming winter was going to be a bad one, Pa Ingalls moved his family to town. The blizzards completely cut the town off from all incoming supplies. Though excited at first, because Laura and her sister Mary could not go to school, yet as Christmas passed her excitement quickly faded. There was very little food for the town. Two boys set out across the prairie for wheat. It was not until May before the snows melted and any train could reach them. Along with the supplies on the train, there was the Ingalls family Christmas barrel. This was a great cause for celebrations.
The long running "LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE" television series was based on this series of books.
This is actually not a novel, but the autobiography of Laura Ingalls Wilder, who was born in 1867 in Wisconsin. She and her family were early settlers. They traveled through Kansas, Minnesota, and the Dakota Territories.
NOTE: The original copyright for this autobiography is 1940, but the illustrated version was not copyrighted until 1953.
