This Ed Langbein Original artichoke majolica cream color stoneware serving plate has a raised center and beautiful floral/leaf design. I have four and am selling each separately, as often people share an artichoke. The center well holds the artichoke, the larger well along the outer area holds melted butter or other dipping sauce, and the rest of the plate is used for the leaves. Langbein was an American designer who worked in Brooklyn in the 1930s through midcentury, and whose works can be found in the Museum of Modern Arts (MoMA). This particular design in an artichoke serving plate was also produced in Gien, France, which may have been where Langbein had it produced. It may be that the design was picked up by a studio there. Not a lot of information about Langbein nor this design.
Each plate measures a little over 9" in diameter. May be some crazing from age. Otherwise in great vintage condition
