Character
The brooch is from the estate of Marija Zadnik, née Košenina, born in 1924, from Ljubljana. It was donated to the museum by her son Boštjan Zadnik.
In order to protect elephants, the trade in ivory was completely banned in 1997. Production has therefore shifted to similar materials such as tusks, teeth or bones of hippopotamus, baboon, narwhal, wild boar, whale or even mammoth and mastodon. However, there are now a multitude of fakes on the market made from various materials, especially plastic, which look quite similar to natural ivory, but do not achieve its special color and luster.
