U.S. steel pots can be I.D'd by the front or rear seam and chin straps, liners are very different. Like shoulder sleeve insignia. have a great Sunday.

sargebill @okiesales2 you're welcome, the webbing varies, sewn straps are WW2, metal clips are 1956 to mid Vietnam, the early production WW2 models swivels were welded then mid war swivels added. khaki canvas to O.D., the liners were 1st rayon then khaki canvas then OD , leather chinstrap, then finally the Vietnam era totally different.

sargebill @okiesales2 the Hawley liner is the early issue, a thick pressed paper dipped in a rubberized plastic, not too popular, didn't last a long time, I got lucky ,have both types the M1 ground troops and M1C paratrooper models both mint condition, the M1 came with the correct fixed bail helmet in a textured rough paint. the abn.issue is with the correct helmet and netting.

sargebill @okiesales2 fixed bail is the welded chin strap retainers, army issue being a rectangle shape, USMC a D ring. WW2 liners have a "rank hole" in the front, small brass grommet later being replaced. the webbing on WW2 and Korean War models have draw strings to adjust the crown, Vietnam era just criss crossed into buckles. The paint differed too as the war went on plus Army helmets had insignia and rank bars painted on, NCO horizontal white bar officers vertical on the back

okiesales2 @sargebill the info is interesting & helpful. My father-in-law was in the Korean War & received a bronze star. We bought him a helmet since he no longer had his. Put it into a case for him. In doing so we bought two (cased one) & the one we have left which doesn’t have the chin strap or lining it’s just the shell so maybe we’ll keep. Happy poshing & cooking

sargebill @okiesales2 You are very welcome, the straps can be found on different sites, atthefront.com is excellent for helmet restorations, 1944militaria has the correct paint, any hobby craft store has the stuff to make helmet stands, i bought the unfinished wood base, stained it and found a broken hammer handle, made a perfect stand. Dad was Army combat Engineers, Korean War, Old Baldy and Pork Chop Hill.

sargebill @okiesales2 He turned 18 in Korea, a skinny farm boy never left home before, he gave me his pistol belt, canteen ,cup and carrier, mess kit assembly, 1st aid pouch and gauze, shovel and carrier, kept a razor edge on it ,used it for more than digging when a Chinese infiltrator fell into his hole.
