On offer, this beautiful example of craftsmanship in creating this sealskin parka, which we believe, came from the Holman Eskimo Co-operative, in operation through the 60's, 70's & 80's, in Holman, now known as Ulukhaktok (name changed in 2006 to better reflect its' community & their culture). This sealskin parka is visually stunning, not only in the craftsmanship to bring a number of ringed sealskins together, so creatively, but in the exquisite design that runs completely around the bottom...showing an inuvit hunter with his sled & dogs hunting a polar bear, on the front & back of coat! The ringed sealskins of the parka are in very good condition, and obviously was well-cared for. Like any article of vintage clothing that's approximately 64 years old, there are a few areas that could easily be repaired...please view/enlarge photos for details/condition (bottom of both pockets; underneath left-side arm; inside lining near zipper start; fur collar at the start). Lining is in very good condition...coat measurements are: arm length: inseam 18"....outstanding 25"
coat width: 40" diameter
coat length: 36"
shoulder to shoulder: 17 1/2"
We believe this was made specifically for a family or community member, where no label was ever attached to the lining....which just adds to the uniqueness of this particular parka. It should be noted that several of these parkas from the Holman Co-op are on display in several museums throughout Canada.
