Like all pieces made by Seattle’s Ebbets Field Flannels, this one holds a special place in baseball lore.
The cap’s an homage to one Frank Fukuda, the man who forged Japan’s connection to American baseball (one that lives on to this day).
Known as the “father of Pacific Northwest baseball,” Fukuda made his way to Seattle’s shores as a Japanese, baseball-loving teenager in 1906, and for good reason — the city was a hub back then for Japanese immigrants looking to settle into American life.
Fukuda’s influence and ambition were such that he’d go from player to founder of several teams at the Asahi Baseball Club before leaving Washington in 1927.
He went on to serve as principal for Portland’s Japanese language school until 1931, and it was then when he managed the team at the city’s Fuji Athletic Club.
