An elegant fashion illustration, partially hand coloured, professionally matted and framed. These are original engravings, not reproductions. Signed Jules David (left) dates ca 1860s, print number 896. The title: 'De Gracieuse' – 'Geillustreerde Aglaja' is the name of the magazine where this illustration was published (1862-1936; see below). In good condition with marks to the glass and frame, and a stain to the matt on the top right.
Size: 10.5 x 7-5/8 inches on the image, 16-3/4 x 12-3/4 inches on the frame.
'De Gracieuse' manifested itself from 1862 until 1936 as an attractive fashion and handicraft magazine targeting a growing audience of fashion-conscious ladies. The fashion examples were usually inspired by the newest fashion in Paris. The displayed patterns were suitable for all hours and occasions of the day. They varied from simple garments to gorgeous evening gowns and from undergarments to travel clothing or sports attire. Male fashion was hardly mentioned in the magazine. Children’s clothing was discussed in special articles.
Prints such as these form part of the print collection of the world famous Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. This is your chance to own your own copy!
