This is truly a one of a kind textile history piece. I’m certain there isn’t another one out there. These silk cigarette slips were made in the 1910-1920. And these particular ones are special edition of all the US University flags and history. These were carefully collected for years, and then hand sewn into a quilt. The topper was likely done earlier, the backing done in the 40s. It likely took someone 40 years or so to even finish this. The slips are the softest silk, so very hard to work with, and whoever made this did an incredible job. The backing is patch-worked. This could be left as is, or seperate from the backing and the slips hung as art. Or left as is. How this is still in the condition it is, I’ll never know. One of the Harvard single slips sold in 2006 for $286USD. Aside from that, there isn’t a ton of comps on these. Because ultimately… the slips inside were made to be viewed and then thrown away with the packaging. The fact someone not only kept, but collected and preserved them all, and thought to quilt them is wild. It’s beyond my mind to comprehend.
There are no other words to describe how truly remarkable this really is. Great piece of American History.
