Authentic French wartime dress dating to circa 1940–1943, made in France and constructed using period-correct austerity tailoring techniques.
This exceptional early-1940s piece features a wide soft collar, dolman (kimono) sleeves, and a decorative double-breasted bodice panel. The silhouette is gently shaped through full-length stitched vertical pleating across the back, released below the waist and secured with an original single-button back waist tab — a hallmark of French WWII-era civilian dressmaking designed to control shape while conserving fabric.
The dress is finished with an original matching fabric belt, allowing the wearer to adjust the silhouette, and includes hidden on-seam pockets, confirming its function as a true day dress intended for regular wear. Made from a soft wool-blend fabric labeled 45% laine, with beautiful drape and a classic taupe/mushroom brown tone typical of wartime dye palettes.
Construction, fabric, labeling, and design details firmly place this piece in the early 1940s (WWII period). This is not a reproduction and has not been modernized or altered.
A rare and honest example of French wartime fashion, increasingly difficult to find in wearable condition.
