Origin of the Design:
The Botanic Garden design was created by Susan Williams-Ellis, an artist for Portmeirion. She developed the concept in 1972 after being inspired by botanical illustrations found in rare books.
Launch and Impact:
The design was launched in 1972 on a new shape of ware called "Drum," based on the Meridian shape. It became one of the world's most successful pottery designs and continues to be a significant part of Portmeirion's turnover.
Iconic Features:
Features various floral motifs, with different flowers appearing on each piece, such as the Cyclamen depicted on the toast rack in the image. The distinctive green leaf pattern forming the border on the range is now an iconic element and part of Portmeirion's company logo.
