"J. Fraget" refers to a very well-known and highly regarded Polish silver-plating factory.
Here's a brief history of the company and what makes their pieces notable:
History of J. Fraget
The company was founded in Warsaw, Poland, in 1824 by two French brothers, Alphonse and Joseph (Józef) Fraget. At the time, Warsaw was under Russian rule, which is why you'll often see "J. Fraget" items referred to as either Polish or Russian.
They were pioneers in the new technology of galvanic silver plating, which allowed them to produce high-quality, durable, and affordable silverware. The firm's excellent craftsmanship and artistic designs quickly earned it a stellar reputation, and it became one of the most prominent silver-plating factories in Eastern Europe. They even supplied tableware for royal courts in Persia, Romania, and Serbia.
The factory continued to operate through the 19th and early 20th centuries until it was closed in 1939 during World War II.
