(2/$20) Vintage Heraldic Enamel Cardigan Guard

This vintage cardigan guard is made of a gold tone metal and has two spring clips. The piece features two heraldic "shields", each with 3 small crosses with orange enamel filling around them, and a bird at the top with black enamel filling around it. I haven't been able to to find any information about the symbolism or origin so if you know, please do share! The two pieces each have a clip on the back and are connected by a dainty, twisting DNA-like rope chain. There is normal wear throughout, most visible as tone loss in the metal of the clips and backs and some tone change in the chain. The only thing that might prevent wearability is not knowing what the "shields" represent, especially with those squared crosses.
