Exclusively worn by women, this featureless mask conceals the wearer's identity while covering as little of their face as possible, lending an air of seduction and mystery to the visage behind it. In addition, the moretta was traditionally strapless, relying on the wearer to hold it in place by biting on an internal clasp. Thus, it gained the moniker servetta muta (mute servant woman), as it rendered its wearer mute. This modern reinterpretation of the moretta has holes for the attachment of a ribbon or cord, and is slightly bigger than its historical counterpart, for greater comfort and versatility.
