Long discontinued and never equaled! This is White Buffalo 6-ply Unspun, a unique 100% wool that produces sweaters and accessories with incomparable warmth and character. The cake is made up of 6 plies of unspun and minimally processed wool. It is twisted as you work it. You can separate the plies and knit them as singles, if you don't want to knit at a bulky gauge. The wool also felts beautifully. This is a true Canadian classic!
This yarn was first used in BC over 100 years ago by West Coast Salish women to create garments and blankets that expressed their culture. Over the decades, these sweaters gained world wide fame, and Spinrite started manufacturing the wool commercially in Listowel, Ontario, together with patterns for sweaters inspired by the West Coast Salish knitters. Mary Maxim also made up kits and patterns incorporating Canadian motifs like maple leaves and hockey sticks. I recommend Sylvia Olsen’s book, “Unravelling Canada” for more information.
Each of these massive cakes of wool is 227 grams and approximately 112 metres. They still have their original labels and packaging. I bought them in 2004 directly from Spinrite and they have been in safe storage ever since. I have added some information from Ravelry.
The colour is called Lilac, and is a true purple.
There is enough yarn here for several projects. Mary Maxim patterns are still available online and from other sources, if you want to recreate the iconic sweater. I have other colours available.
