saranda @garliyogirls No tell him no! These beauties live to be 80-100 yrs.. Human years! They mate for life to their owners and then when their owners die or decide they don't want to bother with them anymore then they have behavioral problems. These birds are as smart as 3 yr old children and they require as much attention if not more than a toddler. I've been rehabilitating birds with behavioral issues for 13 yrs... There is an endless sea of "left over" birds that someone decided they couldn't make a life-long commitment too. It's heart wrenching... The shelters are packed and overflowing and they are running out of resources to take care of them. Please say "no" to breeders so we can stop the overflow of unwanted pets... Especially ones that live 100 years! Please!

minnie_in_shoes Love your birds! :) my grandpa had a harlequin and he's 26 now :) he is so beautiful. Haven't seen him in years. He was not well trained and only liked a few people so when my grandpa passed no one could get him trained. So he's staying at a bird shop where they've been taking great care of him. :)

poshstylesbyme (Part 2 of 2) Very damaging to the bird. I've had a mini Cockatoo (female) and a Quaker parrot. They were lovers, found together and the separation didn't go well. So they went back to the original owner and are happy in love. My longest love was a Cockatiel I named Puffy. He passed a few years ago and can't bring myself to purchase another. saranda @offshore_wife I do accounting for a living but my real passion is working with the birds. I work rescue with the state agencies to rehabilitate birds that have been abused and/or neglected that have behavioral issues....basically they just need lots of love! They stay here with us until they are ready to be adopted. Right now we have 14 birds...guess that makes us insane lol!

I miss him so much. I really got him to soften up at least to ladies lol. He didn't care for men. When we moved he didn't like our housing be we had more natural light so I sold him back to the lady I bought him from.

I live near there...you can come and play with birds here! I don't get paid by the state. It's all volunteer. I do it because I love them. I'll never quit! workingwebers Gussie looks a lot like my Aunt's bird Louie but Louie plucked all his belly feathers so it looks like he's flashing you when his wings are spread! My Aunt passed away suddenly a few years ago and she lived in Cali and I'm in Indiana. I had to quickly find him a home and I was lucky to find some caring people locally that fostered him and then found him a good forever home. Thank goodness for the Internet as I get to see how Lou is doing on Facebook!

We raised them since babies, we initially went to a exotic bird breeder because I wanted a Parakeet lol we then came home with the B&G and African Gray had them for 17 years! When my parents got divorced my dad left and they had been attached to him. We ended up giving Rio to a person to had a entire room designed for his birds. I was a new mom and still can't forgive myself for not taking them!

nicolette524 @saranda Kenya developed anxiety over my dad leaving and plucked his feathers out, he got tons of attention but no amount of attention helped he just missed my dad. Saddest part is my dad came back and wanted to take him Kenya was so excited to see him I'll never forget that day. My dad knew his wings hadn't been clipped and thought he could carry him out to the car and BAM Kenya flew away. We were devastated we had search parties looking for him for days!

saranda @shaboo7 Sadly, most of them bond to one person in particular. It's a common occurrence with all Birds. Even the smaller Breeds, but the large Birds have the ability to do so much damage if they are unhappy with a situation. I'm sorry, I know is not the answer you'd hoped for.

exclusive76 You have such a beautiful birds, I have a Maximilian Pionus, a Meyers, a rescued Senegal, a Fancy green check Conure and. red factor Sun Conure. They are a handful to keep with all their fresh fruits and vegetable diets and the clean up afterwards 😩, but I loved them nevertheless, I almost got an African grey, but don't have the space now, lol.

saranda @exclusive76 Probably should start by figuring out why she's screaming... then work on the behaviour. Birds all scream. Some for pleasure and some for irritation. saranda @rlynmass Oh thank you! It is allot of work but a labor of love. We have 19 in total, as I own a private rescue for abused and abandoned parrots. We have adopted 9 of them (the special needs birds or ones that are un adoptable) I retired this year and now get to play all day! We are learning the farm animal sounds right now... its hilarious! 😉

rlynmass Wow! How amazing! Bless you!! ✨✨ I've had friends who had birds. I've always wanted a Cockatoo but know I wouldn't be able to keep up with the maintenance. I recall my friend was babysitting for a Pet Store owner & there were about 6 exotic birds. I recall I had an insulated ski jacket on & was trying to get an African Grey to perch on me.

rlynmass He bit me & it went straight thru the jacket & punctured my skin. That's the other thing. My cat can do damage if she gets testy mostly stinging scratches but a bird bite!!! How do you escape unscathed? Is it easy to read a bird? Now I know all the cues from my cat & know what provokes her. Are birds more unpredictable?

saranda @rlynmass No not really... they communicate with body language just as cats and dogs but are more complex. I married 5 years ago and my husband gets bit often... but he isn't paying attention to what the bird is trying to say. I RARELY get bit... next to never... unless I'm trying to file their toes and I'm really annoying them lol! They can be incredible and entertaining but they live 100+ years... most people can't even cont.

saranda @rlynmass most people can't even keep a dog or cat 15 to 20 years (the shelters kill millions) so to think someone would make sure they were cared for in the event of a death or search out any older shelter bird... it just doesn't happen often enough. The other sanctuary here (A big funded one) gets 500 calls per month asking if they can take their birds. It's heart breaking.

rlynmass I forgot they had a very long life expectancy! Yes that is heart breaking! I once knew there were exotic birds being auctioned off since their owners were being incarcerated. That's something I never thought about as well. What happens to those pets?? Just such a blessing we have these little souls which add so much beauty & joy & love to our lives!

saranda @rlynmass They can all be wonderfully sweet but the most snuggly ones I think are the cockatoos... they are a one person bird and tend to like snuggling.. although all 5 of my macaws will snuggle so I guess it really depends on the human too. Our 2 cockatoos were raised buy a woman that had them 30 years. Sadly she got dementia and had to place her birds. I still send videos to her children to show her when she's lucid.

saranda @rlynmass But she said both of them hated men... and they both adore my husband so? Anyway, that was most heart breaking to see her say goodbye. She was unmarried and had these babies that she hand fed. They are very loved here. We adopted them as our own as we didn't want them split up now or later. They are very different kinds of cockatoos, one is a citrine and another is a mullican. They are caged next to each other for "sameness" but don't really interact much.

saranda @rlynmass one of them also has deformed feet and requires a little extra care in making sure she can get around well. They are happy. Its so funny that you called them "loveys" that's what I call them and I've never heard anyone else use that word to describe loved ones... children pets hubby... 😊That's wonderful! rlynmass Lol! Yes tag me! My former hairdresser has cockatoos & I would always love hearing stories about them! I had to look up the difference b/w the 2 you mentioned. That's a shame about the woman having to give up her babies! I took care of grandparents w/ Alzheimer's & was hard bearing witness to things slowly slipping away from them. How wonderful you share videos with the children! I'm sure that gives them great comfort!

saranda @wandibiri Because you are so wonderful and kind is why you're so blessed. I have never met someone so kind to strangers. All of the good people are disappearing... I know because the other rescue here gets nearly 500 calls a month for people who want to give up their parrots. I take the ones they can't take. I'm not a 501 (3)C yet (funded by piblic donations) I pay for all the birds I rescue... medical &food But after 20 years I've decided I need help. My goal for 2018 is to get a 501 3c. 😊

saranda @ginaarzaga Awww how cute! Cockatoos are awesome... such lovey birds! We have two of them. One is a mullocan and the other is a sulfur crested... such personality! I have a private sanctuary. I rescue these guys. People don't understand the commitment needed to care for these special creatures. Most of them will live close to 100 years if cared for properly. 💛

kramers_korner @saranda Your fids are beautiful! It’s my dream job to open a bird shelter but money and space are just not in ample supply right now. I’ve been owned by birds for the past thirty years, but at present have four cockatiels; Kramer, Seabiscuit, Robin, and Spartacus. Kramer is 21 and is as spunky as the day I got him. My closet is named after him 😂. He has one corner in his cage, high up on a perch that is his, all his! So I thought kramers_korner would be the perfect name!

I could never do that to an animal no matter how long they live. Poor birds. No living creature deserves that. I had a bad flood in the sanctuary building and i've had to move all of ther rescue babies into the house. Since December! I just started a go fund me page to try and get some financial assistance in putting the building back together. Would you share my link with people you know to help me?

Right now i'm trying to raise money thru go fund me because I had a food in the sanctuary building in December and I had to move all 17 of them into my house. hc990 love your birds. I grew up with a parakeet named Homer J. Bird and he could say several words. I read an article which said that parrots are so smart that they actually know what they are saying. they not only can say square, round etc. but recognize the object and can tell you what it is. amazing.
