judyabolafya @oldsewlvintage Oh Chrissie, these are *amazing!* I've never seen these before & I thought I'd seen 'em all. 😉 What era are they from?

oldsewlvintage @judyabolafya oh my goodness, the story is incredible. The ones in the photo are repros, but still I love them. So in the 1940s during WWII, a Japanese American family named the Takahashis were forced into internment camps in the USA! This was because of the bombing on Pearl Harbor.

oldsewlvintage @judyabolafya In the camps, they made crafts using what they could find, carving little birds out of egg crates and making legs from wires they clipped from window screens! They kept making these little painted birds after the war was over, and they became popular- rightly so!

judyabolafya @oldsewlvintage Thank you for teaching me about these. Praise God that even in the worst of circumstances, that family found peace, beauty, and probably even joy in creating small masterpieces. ✨❤️✨
