Doggy Update~ Nick is home and healing and I think he's gonna make it just fine. Lots of love (and meds) are helping him to get better. ***Our Saint Bernard, Nicholas had emergency surgery last night for GDV or a flipped stomach. Typically, if they don't get to a vet immediately they will go into shock & die. Luckily, we got him there & they were able to perform surgery to put the stomach back in place & suture it to the ab wall. This little trip to the ER set us back $7,000!***

jamieharnden @bicycle_belle Thank you! He was really anxious when we first went to visit but he was in dreamland when we left. We sat with him for over an hour and just loved on him. We are learning more about this condition and making changes at home to help prevent this from happening again. So scary.

kwigmore your dog is awesome! I have a big great Pyrenees and love him to death, he hurt his leg not too long ago by slipping on the stairs and it cost 2000 dollars just to get a cat scan to tell us nothing was wrong! its crazy how much it costs! hope your baby gets well soon :-)

jamieharnden
jamieharnden @kwigmore It is a little overwhelming. They gave us the bill like it was nothing. The hubs and I were like 😫😧. My dad is a retired surgeon and he said he wouldn't have charged 1/2 that to repair a brain aneurysm. On a person. I'm glad to hear your dog was ok and appreciate the sweet words!

ginnydog
ginnydog @jamieharnden my dog died from bloat , your so lucky, are you feeding low fat food
Jun 04Reply
jamieharnden
jamieharnden @ginnydog oh honey, I'm so sorry! What kind of dog was he? Yes, we have had him on a really healthy one for a while. He was overweight when we got him and developed hip dysplasia. Once his weight got down, his hip pain virtually vanished. I guess the deep chested breeds suffer from bloat more frequently, we are getting educated now.
Jun 04Reply
jamieharnden
jamieharnden @vmspinel Thank you so much!!! He's finally eating so I think we are out of the woods. Hoping he can keep his meds down so we can get him off his IV and bring him home

vmspinel So glad he's doing a little better!
Jun 04Reply
ginnydog
ginnydog @jamieharnden I'm convinced that some low fat foods cause gas which can lead to bloat We had a ridgeback. Now I am married to a vet, wasn't then. And they can actually do a tummy tuck when spaying large breeds
Jun 05Reply
jamieharnden
jamieharnden @ginnydog our dog def has that problem, from both directions 🐶💨. I always thought it was because he eats so fast so we are going to feed him in smaller amounts 3-4 times/day instead of twice. He likes to drink a lot of water after and then goes outside and runs around. Both of those things are also supposed to be bad. We read something about checking the food to see if any of the first four ingredients are fat or citric acid, too because that's supposed to be bad.
Jun 05Reply
jamieharnden
jamieharnden @ginnydog The most awful thing we read is the connection between raised feeders and bloat!!! We were instructed to get a raised feeder from the rescue we adopted him from. And the lady's daughter was a vet so we are super confused. Some study by a Dr Glick found a 60% greater chance of developing bloat/GDV if using a raised feeder!!!! Wtf? If that's true, they should almost be by prescription if a vet determines the reward outweighs the risk. We feel like bad parents. 😔
Jun 05Reply
ginnydog
ginnydog @jamieharnden my husband said he's never heard that and you are right to do the raised feeders I think your issue may be the running after he eats! Some dogs are also just more prone too, he is so cute and I love his hair.

samirashram @jamieharnden so happy to see pictures of him home and resting. My friends have raised feeders for their St Bernard, too.....love seeing photos of him. They are the sweetest dogs. ❤️❤️❤️
Jun 07Reply
jamieharnden
jamieharnden @suzannesam Thank you, hon! He seems just like himself and our home feels normal again. The only diff is the plastic cone-of-shame he has to wear. Poor bubba. The thing is so darn huge, he's destroying everything in his wake. We got rid of the raised feeders after doing some research and speaking with our friends with large breed dogs, too. Our vet basically said its a controversial issue and we should err on the side of caution.
Jun 07Reply
jamieharnden
jamieharnden @thirteensporks Girl, it's incredible how well he is doing! We take the cone off when we are with him to give him a break. If you didn't see this massive incision-site on his tummy, you wouldn't know he had a major surgery only 6 days ago. Feeling blessed right about now.
Jun 09Reply
jamieharnden
jamieharnden @thirteensporks Girl, he's like a big furry wrecking ball through the house. $hit just goes flying wherever he goes....no Bueno. Freaks him out so we have all just been keeping an eagle eye on him to make sure he doesn't mess with his wounds. We only put it in for small periods when we have to all be away. Hasn't happened much with Chasen home from college. He's been great to hang out with him at home. 👱🏼🐶

lulu_burford
lulu_burford Oh wow..so sad! But soooooo glad he will be ok. I didn't know this is what happened to him. When I was young our dog died of this, it was awful. We thought the neighbor had poisened her because she barked a lot and we were gone all day. My mom had an autopsy done and it was a turned stomach from eating all her food all at once :0( Lots of hugs xoxoxoxox
