madisonpiperco Hi! I noticed there seemed to be a crazy person tagging your name in a couple of comments on my listings... Sucks that people can be so nasty 😞 Anyways, I noticed that you have a beautiful and very active closet and I was wondering if I could ask you a question... I have had my sales drop by about 75% since June and I can't seem to figure out if it's seasonal or not... Do you happen to have any insight? Thank you so much in advance!!
Aug 14Reply
fairlygirly
fairlygirly @madisonpiperco Yeah idk what her problem was 🙄 I didn't want to reply on your listing and add more negative clutter. You can click the little flag icon next to the individual comments if you want to delete them. Posh added that feature a little while ago and I just noticed. I've flagged a few that got removed really quickly, like in under a minute. Super useful for the retail haters out there. My sales in July weren't as good as June and

fairlygirly @madisonpiperco this months has been slower than last, but it hasn't been 75% dramatic, more like a 20-30% drop. One of my best friends is also a retailer on here and her sales have dropped off some too, but her closet is split about 70/30 retail and resale so it gives her a bit of a cushion, same with some of my personal stuff that's still lingering in my closet. Late summer, especially August usually slows down. Everyone is on vacation, then back to school hits.

fairlygirly @madisonpiperco When things get slow, I try to step up my activity, sharing and following and such, and also listing. List, list, list. If I don't have a ton of new inventory, I'll go back through older listings that don't seem to be getting much action anymore or ones that never really got much traction when I first listed them and I'll relist them. Sometimes I leave the old listings up, sometimes I delete them or switch them to sold out, just depends on
Aug 14Reply
fairlygirly
fairlygirly @madisonpiperco whether or not I want to keep track of my inventory across duplicate listings, which can be a headache. I'll also relist things that I've already price dropped more than I wanted to. And I'll try to space it out, add a listing every hour or two instead of a ton all at once that way they have some time to gather a couple likes. List things that are relevant to parties too if you can. This hustle comes and goes, you just have to grind on. There are

fairlygirly @madisonpiperco always going to be dips and it always freaks me out, but it'll come back. ... wow long winded much? lol sorry for the novel!
Aug 14Reply
madisonpiperco
madisonpiperco @fairlygirly Thank you so much for taking the time to explain so much! I had no idea about flagging comments... That's huge! I have had to take down so many listings because of comments. I just flagged both of the comments that girl left so hopefully those will be removed. Also, it really helps to hear that you freak out with the dips as well... I think I stopped being active when things slowed down so that's probably part of my problem.
Aug 14Reply
madisonpiperco
madisonpiperco @fairlygirly I really appreciate the novel! I never really talk to other retailers on here because I figure they're busy enough already but I feel a lot less stressed after hearing your feedback 😊 I was thinking about trying a switch to mostly lingerie but was afraid to carry any more inventory considering how slow things have been. I feel like I have 2-3k in inventory already! Lol 😁
Aug 14Reply
fairlygirly
fairlygirly @madisonpiperco Yeah the flagging comments thing is huge. I've also taken down a ton of listings that had a ton of likes 😒. Thanks for flagging those. Snotty people are part of the game but it still sucks. It's hard not to get discouraged with the dips and not want to do more, but that just creates a snowball effect. And with Posh, it seems like momentum is everything. I've listed the same item before at the same time with different cover shots
Aug 14Reply
fairlygirly
fairlygirly @madisonpiperco and one listing will take off and the other doesn't. I've done it with the same cover shot but listed at different times, same thing. Once a listing picks up a few likes, it's more likely to get more likes, same thing with an offer or a sale so when you lose momentum, the same thing happens in the other direction. Your closet is doing crazy well though considering it's only a few months old!!
Aug 14Reply
fairlygirly
fairlygirly @madisonpiperco I tooooootally get it!! Every time I have to buy more bins to hold more inventory, I get a little 😳 and retailers are typically super guarded because it's so competitive. Lingerie is nice bc it's so small and easy to store lol but I'll warn you that it can get some hate from the prude crowd on here 😒🙄 there are some super specialty closets that really rock their niche, but breadth, not depth I think is important bc so many sales come from random people making impulse purchases.
Aug 14Reply
madisonpiperco
madisonpiperco @fairlygirly that makes sense about the momentum, for a while I was trying to figure out how Poshmark's algorithm worked and I wasn't sure how momentum factored in but it definitely seems to! And thank you! 😊 I think the month that I had great sales I had also put up like 50 new listings within two weeks so that probably played a huge part.
Aug 14Reply
fairlygirly
fairlygirly @madisonpiperco OOOOH YEAH! lol that definitely would have done it. Listing new things is huge, especially when you're listing every hour, all day, every day. I tend to panic and post a million things 5 mins before a part ends... not the best strategy 😂
Aug 14Reply
madisonpiperco
madisonpiperco @fairlygirly haha, thank you for the warning about the prude crowd! 😊 I live in a 900 sqft condo in SF so I feel like inventory is taking up like 30% of my home lol. Sadly I think I have at least $500 in inventory that was totally different from the wholesale pics and completely unsellable 😭 And I really really appreciate your help!! If you ever think of anything I could potentially help you with let me know!
Aug 14Reply
fairlygirly
fairlygirly @madisonpiperco I miss CA so much!! I'm an LA native. My best friend Lisa is in a studio in Chicago... with almost a thousand active listings, most retail with multiple items per listing 😳 idk how you guys do it! And yeah, filtering out the junk sucks big time 😒 I'm always around if you want to keep in touch 🙂 I'm Rena btw but it's pronounced like Renée, my mom just couldn't spell 😂🙄
Aug 14Reply
madisonpiperco
madisonpiperco @fairlygirly Really?! I am originally from the San Fernando Valley! 😊 I have actually thought about moving to wine country area just to have a garage haha 😊 And again, so nice to meet you! I'm Keli... My closet name is just a totally random name that my cousin suggested I use haha 😊

madisonpiperco
madisonpiperco @fairlygirly if you are ever in the area, let me know! 😉
Aug 14Reply
madisonpiperco
madisonpiperco @fairlygirly Also, a thousand active listings in a space this small is really crazy! She must have stuff hanging from the ceiling lol! 😂😂
Aug 14Reply
fairlygirly
fairlygirly @madisonpiperco lol I like it! very chic. I have a garage now but I'd give it up in a heartbeat to move back home! Louisville is nice, but isn't exactly my uhhhh scene 👀
Aug 14Reply
fairlygirly
fairlygirly @madisonpiperco omg her apartment is nuts, literally a bed and mountains of inventory 😳😂 her cats probably get lost and idk where she keeps her bf
Aug 14Reply
madisonpiperco
madisonpiperco @fairlygirly Aw, glad to hear you like it!! And so funny that she has cats too... I only have one cat and she wreaks havoc on my stuff whenever I open the closet 😂😂 plus she will attack/eat my shipping labels as they come out of the printer 😭
Aug 14Reply
fairlygirly
fairlygirly @madisonpiperco 😂😂😂 omg that's a pain but also hilarious! btw if you don't use adhesive shipping label pouches, you soooo should!! I pretty much don't use any tape anymore ever. I fold the labels, stuff them in the pouch, peel, stick, and USPS priority boxes and tyveks already have a peel and stick closure 🙌 it's magical
Aug 14Reply
madisonpiperco
madisonpiperco @fairlygirly I am still using tape 😭 thanks for the tip!! I've been wanting to make the switch but I stupidly made a bulk order of tape and paper so I'm just waiting until I run out haha... Amazon subscribe and save is great for tissue paper and bubble wrap though!
Aug 14Reply
fairlygirly
fairlygirly @madisonpiperco lol I try to use as little tissue paper as possible! I put everything in clear poly bags so no stray golden retriever hairs attack my inventory
Aug 14Reply
madisonpiperco
madisonpiperco @fairlygirly that makes sense... I think I am probably just inflating my retail costs by using it, to be honest! In the beginning I felt like making everything extra pretty would help with ratings but now I'm not sure it matters haha
Aug 14Reply
fairlygirly
fairlygirly @madisonpiperco I like to get all 5 star ratings, I'm at 4.9 right now, but a wise posher once said "we collect dollars not stars" ;) I don't really think making everything super pretty makes too much of an impact. I make things prettier for people who buy outright instead of making offers, but often those are the people who aren't too active and aren't going to come back to accept and rate anyway. As long as the money gets released, I don't care if it takes 3 days or if they don't
Aug 15Reply
fairlygirly
fairlygirly @madisonpiperco leave a rating. They got what they wanted and I got what I wanted. For a while I did thank you notes and I thought I kinda saw a spike in love notes left, but who knows ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Aug 15Reply
madisonpiperco
madisonpiperco @fairlygirly that's something I never thought about, actually! That people who buy outright don't usually turn into repeat customers... And 4.9 is great!! My rating is a bit lower because of some mistakes I made starting out (like reordering dresses from a wholesaler and assuming they'd send ones that had the same sizing as before 😭) I also def think that quote from the wise posher is spot-on!
Aug 15Reply
fairlygirly
fairlygirly @madisonpiperco It took a while to pull it back up from 4.8, but we collect dollars not stars ;) just keep on keeping on! Also... I know some Poshers like to keep a lower price point in favor of more volume, but there's a balance to strike, I think if you brought your prices up a little bit, like maybe if you relist something, start out a little higher, you may find a better crop of buyers. Sometimes bargain hunters are the most tough to please.
Aug 15Reply
madisonpiperco
madisonpiperco @fairlygirly I was actually thinking of doing that a few weeks ago- listing higher. I just kept dropping everything more and more and on some stuff I'm just breaking even so it's probably a good idea to go through and relist at higher prices. Some of the serious bargain hunting people have been absolute nightmares... I have still kinda been learning what standard boutique pricing is 😊
Aug 15Reply
madisonpiperco
madisonpiperco I didn't finish my train of thought on some of the bargain hunting people I just realized, haha. I was going to say that almost all of my bad ratings have come from people who offered way under the listed price and then asked a million questions about when I'd be shipping 😭
Aug 15Reply
fairlygirly
fairlygirly @madisonpiperco It's constantly a balancing act. I need to bring some of my prices down, but it pains me to do so lol, when my friend brought her prices up, she did it slowly over a few weeks with new listings and realists being higher and raising the price on some popular items she'd already dropped and her sales dipped a little, but picked right back up and now a year and a half later, she's going strong. Her price point is a bit lower than
Aug 15Reply
fairlygirly
fairlygirly @madisonpiperco mine, maybe 20% overall and she has solid sales. One of her friends was probably at about 50% of my current price point and she had good luck with bringing her prices up a bit too.
Aug 15Reply
fairlygirly
fairlygirly @madisonpiperco omg yes, the ones who ask a zillion questions rarely turn into buyers and when they do, I wish they hadn't 😒
Aug 15Reply
madisonpiperco
madisonpiperco @fairlygirly good to hear that she had good luck with it 😊 it seems like dresses are especially easier to sell for more, but I've struggled with selling jewelry even at my current prices 😞 and exactly!! I started realizing I should just decline those people, because it's not worth the money
Aug 15Reply
fairlygirly
fairlygirly @madisonpiperco Jewelry was very hard for me when I was first getting my boutique going. Even at very low prices, I had trouble selling it. Now I keep my prices higher and just accept lower offers, especially when it's bundled. I thought most people would bundle jewelry because shipping is so high, but weirdly a lot of people just buy a single piece of jewelry ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I think I sell more jewelry on offers than on price drops though.
Aug 15Reply
madisonpiperco
madisonpiperco @fairlygirly that makes sense... Do you do a lot of price drops? I've done them maybe twice a month in the past.
Aug 15Reply
fairlygirly
fairlygirly @madisonpiperco Not everyday, but if sales seem a little slow, I'll price drop a few throughout the day. I try to space them out as much as possible. Price drops really are a good way to get people into your closet. You don't necessarily sell the item you dropped, but it seems to help activity overall. You have to go 10% lower than the lowest price your listing has ever been though so that's another advantage to starting out with a bit higher of a price.
Aug 15Reply
fairlygirly
fairlygirly @madisonpiperco Sometimes I leave the price lowered, sometimes I raise it back up later. That's also why relisting older listings is helpful, you have room to price drop again.
Aug 15Reply
madisonpiperco
madisonpiperco @fairlygirly that makes sense and sounds like a good strategy! 😊 I can't remember my how low my last price drop was on my listings (I think I went through and did everything at once) so I should probably keep a chart 😭
Aug 15Reply
fairlygirly
fairlygirly @madisonpiperco Yeah, I would definitely keep track on a spreadsheet or a note in your phone. Before I started keeping track, I would accidentally drop by 15% or 20% or not drop far enough to trigger the notification. I hate that because then you lose the opportunity to do another price drop later. I only ever drop by the minimum necessary to trigger the alert unless that would put something at $41 and I want to go to 40 or 39 or something like that so that it's not an awkward number.
Aug 15Reply
madisonpiperco
madisonpiperco @fairlygirly thanks again for all of the feedback 😊 it's been so nice talking to another person on here! Are you looking forward to the jump in traffic for back to school season or is it more stressful for you?
Aug 16Reply
fairlygirly
fairlygirly @madisonpiperco Np :) it's definitely nice to compare notes and such with other sellers. Every time I sell something I'm like yay! ... oh 😒 because I have to pack and ship it 😂
Aug 16Reply
madisonpiperco
madisonpiperco @fairlygirly Oh, totally, haha... I think I am the slowest packer ever! I am getting a little better but I am sloth-like 😂
Aug 16Reply
fairlygirly
fairlygirly @madisonpiperco Packaging sales is 90% working up the will and 10% actually packaging.
Aug 16Reply
madisonpiperco
madisonpiperco @fairlygirly Lol!! 😂😂😂 sounds exactly right!!
