Just to help those who don't have a pair and are looking to buy some! I've seen multiple fakes on here, easily spotted now that I have real Burks. Fakes have a smooth, non textured footbed while real ones have a defined shape. The straps are very low quality. The real ones have Birkenstock "engraved" in the footbed rather than just printed on. I've noticed people list them NIB/NWB but the fakes I recieved also did so watch for those as well. Please feel to comment more tips as I can't list all:)

wendyzeee
wendyzeee Thank you so much for posting this I did not even realize that they made fake Birkenstocks. I think I am going to buy my Birkenstocks straight from the factory or from the shoe store rather than on here! Some people you just can’t trust. And it seems to be rather a shame!
Jun 23Reply
jenco7
jenco7 @wendyzeee I didn't know either when I first purchases these. In fact, I didn't know until someone pointed it out, sooo embarrassing! My first actual pair were at an authorized retailer since I didn't trust anyone here. But it's fairly easy to spot fakes now after 2 pairs
Jun 23Reply
wendyzeee
wendyzeee @jenco7 I hear what you’re saying honey. It is absolutely ridiculous that people are allowed to sell fake items on this site! I have sold many items that are all authentic and I could not sell a fake item with a good conscience. Some people have no scruples whatsoever and that is terrible!
Jun 23Reply
jenco7
jenco7 @wendyzeee it's a real shame people do this here :/ and it's not limited to these either! I have seamless skirts from e bay from years ago and saw the same ones under urban outfitters saying the tags were just torn off asking $20 a pair when they were a dollar online! I'm super careful here before purchasing. Still enjoy it but there are shady listings every once in a while.
Jun 23Reply
wendyzeee
wendyzeee @jenco7 I just sold a Louis Vuitton key cles and it was absolutely authentic! I even enclose the receipt with it! The girl was very happy with what she received and it was absolutely authentic. I don’t sell anything that is not authentic! I could not do that with a good conscience because I was brought up right! Some people just don’t care and it is so rude! Take care and bless you my dear!
Jun 23Reply
jenco7
jenco7 @wendyzeee it's so very rude and sad :( but I'm so glad for you and your sale! :) I hope you have a wonderful weekend :) take care! 💜

bewhooyouare
bewhooyouare I know that all Birkenstock styles have "Birkenstock" embossed on the side, but I think that some of the older Papillio styles have "Papillio" embossed somewhere on the uppers and then the Birkenstock logo stamped on the side. I could be wrong (meaning that my coveted, funky pair of old Papillio Gizehs are fake). But here is a link to Englin's footwear. Note that they say "almost never".. http://www.englinsfinefootwear.com/blog/are-my-birkenstocks-fake/
Jun 23Reply
geranium3121
geranium3121 Thanks for this post! I often tip off sellers/buyers & report listings that are obviously fakes, but who am I... the Posh police? 😳 It’s a real shame that there are so many here. Makes it difficult for those of us selling authentic items when buyers are wary, & it bums me out that people are getting scammed. I’m happy to give my opinion on the authenticity of any potential Birkenstock buy here if any fellow Posher wants to reach out... just comment on one of my posts. ✌🏻
Jun 23Reply
jenco7
jenco7 @bewhooyouare Yes! I wish I had more room for photos. The real ones have birkenstock fully stamped into the side of the bottom of the strap while fakes have only the outline of it stamped. As if it were done by a cookie cutter if that made sense.
Jun 23Reply
jenco7
jenco7 @geranium3121 Thank you as well! You've helped me before at least twice I want to say :) I've also felt like a posh police commenting how the listed birkenstocks are fake but I always just get a comment back saying I'm rude and disrespectful because they're 100% real when they obviously aren't. But I'm sure there are buyers that will take the sellers word for it and that's what I'd like to prevent! It was such an embarrassment for me learning that I was scammed and a pain to get $100 back.
Jun 23Reply
geranium3121
geranium3121 @jenco7 Happy I could help! If sellers are defensive, that’s usually a tip off too... I just hope potential buyers appreciate my effort. I know I’d appreciate being warned so, do unto others, right? 😉 Thanks for letting your lesson be a teaching moment for others. Have a great weekend & Posh on!
Jun 23Reply
bewhooyouare
bewhooyouare Going back to your original post though, a printed stamp of "Birkenstock (not embossed) on the lower side of the uppers doesn't mean 100% of the time that they are fake. I posted the link above where they say "almost never." I found with older Papillio Birkenstocks that they used the printed stamp (but all of the hardware, of course, has Birk engraved into the metal). But let me know if you guys find otherwise!

lindsayprater
lindsayprater Thanks for sharing this! So, I'm new to poshmark (amd new to buying a lot of name brands, actually) and I've dealt with returning (and accidently buying) multiple fake items already. REALLY frustrating! You just have to be super careful, and skeptical. Could I tag you on a pair of birks I just bought and get your opinion on authenticity? I'll post it to my closet. Others are welcome to give feedback, also!
Jun 23Reply
jenco7
jenco7 @lindsayprater Of course! :) I'll be more than happy 💜
Jun 23Reply
geranium3121
geranium3121 @lindsayprater Look for a small 4 number/letter code stamped/imprinted into the suede footbed underneath the size/brand. Fakes won’t have that. The buckles, soles, etc. are commonly faked, but the code is never there. ;)

kmh434
kmh434 So sorry, can you please clarify how to tell nock-offs from the real ones? Is it the color of the foot bed label and how wide the foot area is? I have purchased 3 different pairs off posh and 1 from a retail store. They all 4 pairs have the buckle name, side strap name and the souls all say birk. Thank you for your help 😁
Mar 01Reply
jenco7
jenco7 @kmh434 so sorry for the delayed response! I really find the difference by looking the footbed. It's not as contoured/defined, and unless they're the vegan ones, they should have 4 numbers engraved in them. And the straps on fake ones totally look like cardboard and are thinner than authentic ones.
Mar 03Reply
jenco7
jenco7 @kmh434 Where the fake ones are bent from storing, it leaves a pretty noticeable crease. As far as size, the fake ones I have(size 38) are bigger than any authentic 38's. they dont have any numbers engraved or the logo on the footbed is simply printed on there vs imprinted/engraved. If the straps are leather, it should have numbers on the bottom.
Mar 03Reply
jenco7
jenco7 @kmh434 Non leather have felt but the straps are still thick. I'm going to use Neverstoploving birkenstocks as an example for the stamping, in her picture, the strap is bent from storage. No authentic ones I have out of 7 pairs have any bent straps at all no matter how roughly stored they are. The footbed looks like cork and cardboard, plus the number 38 and birkentock logo look simply printed on.
Mar 03Reply

geranium3121 Birks come in sizes up to 16, I believe, but never in half sizes, as far as I’m aware. There’s a blog at http://www.ilovebirkenstocks.com/blog/category/spotting-fake-birkenstocks-part-3 that has lots of awesome info that Poshers will find useful. The whole blog is super helpful & will answer just about any questions anyone may have about Birkenstock. It’s nearing sandal season & the fakes are listed in abundance already... Such a bummer:(

veryblessed4
veryblessed4 @jenco7 do you know of any sellers in specific that are selling fakes? I just bought a pair the other day (I haven’t received them yet), but I’m wondering if this is a red flag- the box misspelled tobacco (tabacco) for the color of the sandal. It seems minor, I know, but I didn’t think that was something Birkenstock would overlook. I bought them from a vendor named frindlerta
May 20Reply
jenco7
jenco7 @veryblessed4 that is a little weird! I don't see any red flags on the shoes themselves, but I'm always a little wary about sellers who have a ton of NWT cheap listings if that makes sense!

Jul 14Reply
somelissa
somelissa @rachwonderful the ones with the slick footbed are easily identified as authentic. The fake ones will never be made of genuine leather. There have been a lot of fakes on here with half sizes for example 40 L9 M7.5 when authentic ones should have 40 L9M7

Since berks conform to the foot of the person breaking them in they really aren't supposed to be worn by another foot other than the original wearer. But if they feel good that's great but no berk will ever fit better than a new pair you break in with your own. Feet

nikkih54 @jenco7 thanks for this information! Unfortunately, I just got duped on Posh and I sure hope I can return and get a refund. The biggest indicator is that the size on the box and sole says L7 M6...and ladies 7 is equivalent to a men’s 5. The box also has the wrong color and material. The uppers feel like cheap plastic. I just don’t understand how people live with themselves by robbing people blind...ugh!

alixandra27 @sofiane11 Thank you for asking that question. I wish I could ask someone who purchased a pair from rshep23 their opinon of the product they received.

georgiaharter If they have a leather stamp on the foot bed but have felt lining inside the straps, they are fakes. If they are true vegan Berkinstocks, then they will have a vegan stamp on the heel bed. Was looking to replace my old ones and when I bought a new pair they were felt lined. Luckily I got a refund. A lot of people don’t realize they are even selling fakes.

wintertriangle Some of the fakes are "quite good" these days. I just got a pair and you would have to be a very good detective to know they aren't quite right. I've worn birks for 25 years so I know the look and feel, and all the "things to check" but these were "almost right"......I don't believe in calling out sellers because some sellers may not even KNOW they are selling non-authentic Birkenstocks. :( That is the sad part. They are honest but who they bought from originally was not. :(

wintertriangle @jenco7 Jen,like I said above, some of these are very difficult to assess. All my authentic Birks have that number engraved below the Birkdenstock Made in Germany part. it is usually close to the arch. And it is on BOTH shoes. Can you confirm this? Because I have not purchased any lately....My mayaris and bostons have it in both places and I got them from a certified birkenstock store. However, some Arizonas I just got online from swap site only have that number on ONE of the shoes.

jenco7 @wintertriangle i agree!! I believe it's supposed to be on both shoes. my last "new" pair has it on both shoes! sometimes it's hard to distinguish too because the lettering varies

wintertriangle @jenco7 Maybe some others can double check this before we make it a "fact". I only have a pair of leather bostons and 2 pair of Mayari. But both shoes do have that number engraved. These are 2-4 years old though. So I feel like we need to be more sure about this before saying yes or no. Maybe others here can check their "for sure" authentic Birkenstocks and report back. :)

jenco7 @tenzy I just want you to know that your selling a lot of fake birkenstocks to unsuspecting buyers:( I see you have a mix of authentic and very unauthentic birks

luvnlaughter Would you mind giving me your opinion of tuckerweber16 Birkenstock supply. I wish I had seen this post before as I didn’t suspect the huge fake industry...I just bought a pair. I might take to my local store for verification.

_cocos_closet I never bought Birks before. So real ones ever come with a tag attached in addition to or instead of a box?

rubkcube
rubkcube @jenco7 I went to Rack Room shoe store, they had four different styles of Birkenstocks, but one style had the "cookie cutter" lettering. Do you think they are selling fake Birks?

amandajorn812
amandajorn812 Are you able to weigh in on a pair of clogs I just bought? They seem to have all the right things, to be real, but they have the lining which is glued in. When I saw the pictures online it looked great… in person the glue makes them look like fakes. I’ve been a birk wearer for almost 30 years!

verified_vtg
verified_vtg @geranium3121 I have seen fakes that have the 4 letters/numbers stamped into the footbed, so that's not always 100%.
