I get frustrated when I see Seller’s claiming they are selling gold filled jewelry when I know for a fact that it’s not. I’m a jeweler by trade, I’ve been fabricating jewelry for 20 years and I assure you, gold filled jewelry cannot be machine made, mass produced, or cast in anyway shape, or form. If your buying gold filled jewelry make sure it’s handmade. If it’s not handmade then there is no way it’s gold filled. Don’t get scammed into purchasing gold plated that will fade & turn skin colors!

Thank you for this! I used to work for Zales, so when I see poor quality jewelry being passed off as authentic gold/silver, it really irks me!

Perfecto 🙌 Ditto for a closet that passes new stock sterling jewelry as antique and charges mega! Beware of anyone that calls themselves an antique shop - they wouldn’t be selling on Poshmark! I had no idea as long as I’ve been sharing your closet that it’s all handmade! You’re really good and completely accurate about gold filled quality and value!

Super informative.. I buy jewelry for my brick and mortar store, basically all “costume” but with some exceptions... but I’ve always wondered why some of my more expensive gold pieces like 14k for instance, would turn and others would not.. I guess I assumed they were all gold plated and it depended in the material underneath. This was super helpful! I appreciate you sharing! Now I’ll know always to clarify 14k or 14k gf! 😌

Jun 14Reply

moodtherapy
@nerdiebirdie91 okay so this post totally explains what gold filled is. I know a lot of sellers say they are selling gold filled but the reality is, it’s not. Gold filled jewelry can only be handmade. It cannot be cast or mass produced. This post should cover all the info you need but pls lmk if you still have questions after reading.
Jun 17Reply

nerdiebirdie91
@moodtherapy. Thank you so much! Yeah I've had "gold filled" jewellery before that gave me a rash or turned colors, so I'm super glad you have this info :))))

Have you spoken to Posh about distinguishing this, as they do colors for example, so buyers can purchase as educated consumers? I just sent them a request to consider it. It hurt everyone selling better jewelry when buyers are trying to purchase as if you are selling alloy. You do a good job educating that might be a stand requirement if selling anything but costume jewelry. Thoughts?
Aug 09Reply

designingdeb
I see you’ve allowed others to share it. Could I? I try to include pictures showing the stamp so they know what the are buying.
It would be great if Posh did parties with only REAL jewelry! We should be paid accordingly!

You are just the guy I want to talk to. Lol. I kept your closet in my likes so I could get back to you. I had a 14k ear cuff for 30 yrs. Pretty much never took it off. One day it fell off into my lap and next day it was gone. I want another one just like it. The good wedding band that has been around forever.
Oct 11Reply

sherid10
Kind of curled on the outside and flat against your finger is what the cuff was shaped like. It was about half the width of that basic band I’m sure you’ve seen a million of. Can you fix me up with one to replace my lost one. I want 14k not gf or anything else. I can post a photo of the band.
Oct 11Reply

sherid10
I got a million compliments and I always said I should’ve bought 100 of them and sold them. So basic and yet I’ve never seen another one jest like it.

How about solid gold as compared to hollow for lack of a better word. I was told one time that a a bracelet, necklace whatever could be hollow to keep the weight and price down. Is the fact or just another bit of bogus info?
Oct 11Reply

moodtherapy
@sherid10 can you please put up that photo? I cannot picture it in my head.. Most likely I would be able to help, as long as we are on the same page..
Oct 11Reply

moodtherapy
@sherid10 it is true that a bracelet or some other things can be made hollow to keep the weight down.. It helps keep some of the pieces affordable (kinda). My wife has a gold bracelet that is hollow, she has had it for many years..
Oct 11Reply

sherid10
I posted in my closet and tagged you. Let me know if you get it, ok? I can find more pictures i'm sure if necessary. I'm excited about this. i wore that cuff for 30 and of course there was a story behind. I dont want it hollow.. lol

@moodtherapy hi!! Thanks for sharing this post!! Can I also list it and share it? Misrepresenting jewelry is crushing for those of us doing things correctly. Plus buyers are cheated. The more this information is shared, the stronger the Poshmark community will be. We should not have to lower our prices to compete with junk $2 rings.
Apr 04Reply

jojoindyfashion
I just want to add that you can purchase finished gold filled jewelry and findings from certified jewelers, wholesalers, and artisans. Rio Grande, which is a very reputable jewelry supplier, sells gold filled finished jewelry, chains, and findings. Having said that. There is a ridiculous amount of fake gold, gold filled and 925 sterling silver jewelry for sale on Poshmark.
Apr 04Reply

jojoindyfashion
Gold filled jewelry, by law, must be stamped or marked with the fraction, karatage, and type (e.g., "1/40 10k RGP" or "1/40 10k gold overlay"). An honest seller will show photos of the stamps on the jewelry. If you’re unsure, ask questions or purchase from a trusted seller.
Apr 04Reply

Hello, I absolutely love that you listed this information. I get so tired of seeing people selling fake gold filled jewelry. Would you mind if I used the photo of the gold filled thickness for my handmade gold filled jewelry listings? Thanks!

@designingdeb people are selling those junk $1 earrings and rings for $40, $50, $78, $89, $99. One person actually bought a $1 earring for $89 and left positive feedback but I think the buyer is in on the scam. If you do a search for New 2ct princess cut solitaire diamond earrings, a bunch of listings show up. They all have the same photos. Those sellers don’t respond to questions, they just delete them.
Jul 12Reply

designingdeb
@stylebelle do you know how to report them? If you do it stops them at least for awhile. But then they start selling crap wigs etc. It would help if you’d write to Poshmark and complain it would help. I feel like it’s only me. I like the rings when I see them plus report them. That way I see them when the drop the price. Then I report them and look for their sales of the item and report those. Outs fraud. Give me the names if you like or tag me on them.

Thank~You for posting this vital information! So many people do not understand the difference’s & many merchants out there are very content to keep the paying customer BAFFLED while they come up with gold vermeil (total junk) Gold over silver (again short lived at best) electroplating 🙄 it goes on & on…. I have many pieces made of real gold filled that I made 15 years ago & they still look as good today as the day I made them! So again Thank~You Guys 😉
