I'm a Northern girl, but l learned quickly to adapt to certain Southern customs when I came here in the 90s. It is customary to refer to women with whom one is close and who is older than oneself as 'Miss First Name'. It's one of the sweetest Southern idiosyncrasies I've ever been given the honour of participating in. The custom feels respectful and appreciative of the referenced lady.
