I've always found the quality of this brand to be really good and their shoes true to size, so may be that pair was just a one off. The upper is made of soft, high quality leather, so they can definitely stretch up 1/4 to 1/2 a size up, as the leather will ultimately settle and conform to the shape of your feet.
