These adorable innocent birds are going extinct. The species is declining at an alarming rate.
Please don't place thier feeders out in the open. They need hedges to hide from predators (hawks, cats, snakes).

Thanks for the info on the sparrows.
cozoncrochet
@kathiemahoney Absolutely.. Thanks so much for taking the time to read this! 💞 It breaks my heart that these innocent playful birds are going extinct 💔
kathiemahoney
@cozoncrochet I had no idea there were in such danger. I don’t think people realize or take for granted that animals will always be here. They have no idea the devastation losing a species will be.
cozoncrochet
@kathiemahoney I agree with you 100%, it truly would be devastating. Ive noticed that they aren't as abundant as they once were where I live, I have to search for them now. I'm hoping this post will help inform people. I know not everyone will take the time to read it, but I'm grateful for the few that do and I believe that will make a difference.

@cozoncrochet Thanks for sharing this/caring! Not sure if you are aware but there's an even bigger threat right now to birds, a mysterious illness that's sweeping the country, esp East Coast. There's a suggestion in my state to remove all feeders bc it seems to be viral/passing to diff types of songbirds and woodpeckers that come to feeders.
tokidokitiger
@cozoncrochet We found 3 dead here in RI, that showed the signs (esp around eyes) and were all under the feeder; I reported the cases to state DEM... neighboring states have had confirmed cases, so no surprise it's here. It's very sad there are more threats for the birds to contend with and I hope more ppl become aware! We had our feeders out, not knowing about the illness till a few days ago 😢
cozoncrochet
@tokidokitiger Oh no! That is so sad 😔💔 I would usually try to clean my feeders often, but I had no idea this was such a big problem! Thanks so much for letting me know! It's just so sad that thier numbers are decreasing so rapidly and now there's another thing killing them. I wish I could save them all!
cozoncrochet
@tokidokitiger Could you please tell me what the signs are?
cozoncrochet
I live in Utah and I haven't heard anything yet, but I'd like to keep an eye out. This is just so sad. 😔
tokidokitiger
@cozoncrochet There's good info on Audubon's site, but - eyes looking puffy or crusty or blinking/half closed, excessive ruffled feathers, loss of balance, overall sick looking. I saw 2 that were puffy looking and had blinky eyes in the feeder, at first I thought they were younglings (& it does seem to be affecting younger ones more), but looked closer and they were adults, that just looked ill.
tokidokitiger
@cozoncrochet nwf dot org also has updates. It seems to be mostly East Coast & Mid-Atlantic atm.
cozoncrochet
@tokidokitiger That just breaks my heart... poor little ones. Thanks so much for the info!
tokidokitiger
@cozoncrochet I know, very sad. I guess the deaths are decreasing in some states where it first appeared, so that's good. Yw btw 🙏🏼

I just filled my feeders before our first big snowstorm. We have loads of birdhouses in our yard for shelter.

You have a beautiful closet!
aimby
Thank you for these articles. Very informative. We do provide shrubs & bushes for them to hide in. 😊 Enjoy their singing. When I step outside to fill their feeders (near their protective hiding spots), they come out to see me & sing to me. One male in particular feels comfy enough to eat just a few inches from me. My heart is full. 💜 Thanks for caring about them! I love birds & all animals.
cozoncrochet
@mtcloset88 Aw! I'm so glad to hear that! Thank you for caring for our little friends! 🐦
cozoncrochet
@iwillstyle Thank you!
cozoncrochet
@aimby I'm so glad you've been able to see how sweet and adorable they are! ❤️ I wish more people just took a few minutes to watch them, they are so sweet and so fun to watch. I'm sure they'd bring a smile to anyone's face! I wish I could do more to spread the word, these little babies need us.
cozoncrochet
@aimby Thank you for taking the time to read this and thank you so much for being a fellow sparrow lover and taking care of them too! ❤️🐦

We feed 11/15-3/15. I used to keep my feeders up all year but we’ve had bears in the yard. This year we started adding lots of small bird houses so they have shelter. Clearly, some have residents. Some still appear to be vacant:
cozoncrochet
@mtcloset88 Too cute! Some people have added cameras inside the bird houses to watch them set up their nest and hatch their babies. It's so sweet! They're just so adorable!
delmarvadesigns
@cozoncrochet I have floodlights inside & outside of my carport. I’ve had wrens nesting there for years. I call it their winter & summer homes. The lights are warm so I guess it’s good for nesting. We routinely can see the babies on the inside light.
cozoncrochet
@mtcloset88 Cute! ❤️ I feel bad for them during the winter because it gets so cold. I live in Utah and our Winters are extreme, I'd welcome them all in my house if I could! 😅
delmarvadesigns
I live in CT so it’s also cold. I have some kind of bird that lives in my hydrangeas. They try to fly in the windows at night.
cozoncrochet
@mtcloset88 Aww.. poor little sweeties! I always wonder where my sparrows sleep at night, but I feel a little better knowing that at least the little ones are well fed!
beesquaredtwice
I had no idea! I will definitely be following these instructions!
cozoncrochet
@beesquaredtwice Thank you so much!! 🙏❤️🐦

@katt_sweeter How sweet, I love house finches too! I also see a lot of robins in my area. I just love birds, they are so sweet and playful! Hearing them sing in the morning lifts my spirits. ♥️ And it makes me happy to hear from a fellow bird lover!

This is great
blulghtspecial
Sparrows are the sweetest little things. I found an injured baby nursed him to health. He can’t fly so he lives with me and he’s the best, most snuggly, biggest personality little guy. I love sparrows.
cozoncrochet
@blulghtspecial That warms my heart! They are beautiful sweet creatures! 🐦♥️ And they really do have such great personalities, I wish more people could see it!
