A beautiful porcelain brooch .... A lovely flower (maybe a carnation?) in multiple shades of pink ... slender green stem and leaves ... an edging of gold swirls completes the picture ... this beauty weighs in at 6.2 grams .... measures 1-1/16" in diameter ... brass colored base plate with secure prongs ... "C" catch clasp and hinged pin in perfect working order ... looks like a clear glaze was fired over the hand-painting ... in good condition with no chips, cracks or nicks ... some very minor wear to the gold, does not at all detract from the beauty of this piece ... otherwise in excellent vintage condition. About Porcelain Pins ... The Victorian era (1837 – 1901) was an age of sentiment and flowers were everywhere! Floral decoration appeared on china, wallpaper, fabric, stationery, needlework and jewelry. One of the many leisure arts favored by women was china painting. Porcelain blanks were imported from Europe, and many ladies took instruction in painting flowers. Toward the mid to late 1800’s, hand painted china brooches and plaques were popular gifts. Some of these tokens simply depicted a favorite flower, but many incorporated the “Language of Flowers”, conveying a special message to a friend or loved one. Stock No. 041614M23881
