The fern-like image which looks like a Christmas tree in this ornament is an original wet cyanotype. Cyanotype is one of the earliest photographic processes, invented in the mid-1800s by Sir John Herschel, originally used to reproduce “blueprints.” It was made by coating paper with ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide which when carefully mixed together become a photosensitive emulsion which yields a beautiful blue. When the paper is dry, objects can be placed onto the photosensitive paper and left in the sun where it will react to the ultraviolet light.
A wet cyanotype is created by adding liquids to the treated paper before the sun exposure. This process can create interesting patterns and different color tones. This was made in Pennsylvania sun and would be a great addition to your Christmas tree.
