Antique Victorian framed photograph of boy and girl. The pair is likely brother and sister as they resemble each other. The brother has his arm around his baby sister’s shoulders. Their hair is parted identically. He has a dapper military/ naval style suit and cap with buttons running the lengths of the lapels. His head is cocked slightly and he makes direct eye contact with the camera. His baby sister has a white, Christening-style gown and knit jacket. If you look closely at her left hand you will see the armature of a posing stand that was used as an assist for these long exposure photos. She apparently couldn’t sit as still as her big brother and you will see a very slight superimposed blur to the edges of her face. It appears the photographer may have corrected her pupils to align with the viewer. I see these beautiful children and then have a startle when I realize that these are our ancestors! Time flies and this moment was frozen for all posterity.
The photo is framed in an oval wood frame that has a gilt wash over it. Convex/ bubble glass protects the photo.
I do not believe this is a post-mortem photo.
Size: 15” x 12” x 1”
Condition: Good condition considering the age. The glass bubble is intact. The wood frame has some mild scuffing and cracking in the glaze here and there. The back edge of the frame has ‘ding’ (see photo) but it isn't obvious when frame is hanging on the wall. The photo has mild and consistent fading consistent with age.
